The Onyx Boox Palma is dead, long live the Onyx Boox P6 Pro

Brad Linder, Liliputing:

Over the past few years the company’s Onyx BOOX Palma line of pocket-sized eReaders have gained traction among folks looking for an E Ink device for distraction-free reading and other light tasks on the go. What makes the new BOOX P6 Pro special is that it’s the first model with a SIM card slot and support for 5G data networks and it’s also the first of the company’s phone-sized models to feature a E Ink Kaleido 3 color display.

The Onyx Boox Palma is one of my favourite e-readers, despite running an obsolete version of Android loaded with bloatware. Its form factor is perfect for on-the-go usage—it’s slim enough to slip into a jacket pocket and light enough that you forget it’s there. The phone-like shape makes it ideal for reading while standing on the subway… or stirring a pot of ragù.

The P6 Pro Colour seems like a cool device, but colour displays don’t make much sense on smaller devices. The P6, though, looks like a worthy successor to the Palma. It features more scratch-resistant front glass and an ambient light sensor for automatic brightness adjustment. I can’t say much about stylus support, as I barely use it on my Kobo Libra Colour. The integrated 5G modem is the most intriguing feature, though—i’d love to rock a black-and-white phone.
